The margins of a resection tend to be principally based on artistic assessment associated with the bowel during surgery. We hypothesized that histological evaluation of resected muscle may recognize occult changes indicative of prognosis. Little intestinal samples from 18 horses undergoing resection for SSID and 9 horses euthanised for explanations unrelated to gastrointestinal pathology were used.
