The undesirable toxic byproduct, chlorite (ClO2−), is a common outcome of the chlorine dioxide and ultraviolet/chlorine dioxide oxidation methods. A multitude of approaches have been formulated to eradicate ClO2-, but invariably demand extra chemicals or energy. This study reported a novel solar photolysis-based approach for the mitigation of ClO2-, complementing its efficiency with the simultaneous removal of accompanying micropollutants. Water-relevant pH levels enabled efficient decomposition of ClO2- into chloride (Cl-) and chlorate ions via simulated solar light (SSL), reaching a Cl- yield of up to 65% under neutral conditions. Within the SSL/ClO2- system, under conditions of neutral pH, multiple reactive species formed, including hydroxyl radical (OH), ozone (O3), chloride radical (Cl), and chlorine oxide radical (ClO). The steady-state concentrations, observed during the study, were in the order of: O3 ( 08 ), ClO ( 44 10-6 ), OH ( 11 10-7 ), and Cl ( 68 10-8 ). The SSL/ClO2- system effectively degraded Bezafibrate (BZF) and the six other selected micropollutants, with pseudofirst-order rate constants ranging from 0.057 to 0.21 min⁻¹ at pH 7.0. In contrast, treatment with SSL or ClO2- alone resulted in negligible degradation for most of these compounds. Modeling BZF degradation by SSL/ClO2- at pHs 60-80, based on kinetic principles, revealed hydroxyl radicals (OH) as the primary contributor, trailed by chlorine (Cl), ozone (O3), and hypochlorite (ClO). Water background components – humic acid, bicarbonate, and chloride – reduced the efficacy of the SSL/ClO2 system for degrading BZF, essentially by competing for reactive species. Photolytic mitigation of ClO2- and BZF, under the influence of natural solar light or in authentic water systems, was also demonstrated. This study showcases a previously unrecognized natural mechanism for the reduction of ClO2- and micropollutant levels, providing substantial implications for understanding their ultimate fate and distribution in natural environments.

Industrial urban symbiosis (IUS) is gaining recognition within the water industry as a pivotal method for circular municipal wastewater management, thereby addressing urban water scarcity. IUS, predicated on the participation of actors with different organizational backgrounds, frequently encounters the challenge of conflicting objectives. Different values are scrutinized in this study to understand why various organizations engage in a nascent circular wastewater collaborative initiative. A comprehensive study is presented, comprising a literature review of 34 scientific articles and a detailed case study analyzing a prospective circular wastewater system through IUS in Simrishamn, Sweden. A greater number of nabiximols-treated individuals (14 out of 64, or 21.9%) fulfilled the responder criterion than placebo recipients (3 out of 33, or 9.1%); nevertheless, nabiximols' superiority could not be definitively established. Subsequent analyses showcased notable increases in positive outcomes for tics, depression, and quality of life.
