Can we later discern and understand auditory input that previously failed to gain our attention? To assess the potential for retrospective conscious access, we explored the effect of spatially cued attention following word presentation. Two separate sound streams were delivered to each ear simultaneously. A primary task for one stream involved the rapid classification of semantic meaning. The alternate data stream included occasional target terms, whose identification constituted a secondary task following the experimental trial. Our findings suggest that guiding attention to the secondary stream resulted in enhanced accuracy in identifying the target, even when the cueing was administered over 500 milliseconds post-target cessation. Moreover, applying retro-cueing procedures led to a rise in the accuracy of target detection and a noticeable increase in the subjective experience of audibility for the target. Based on quantitative models of the experimental data, the effect was purely perceptual, unconnected to the enhancement or safeguarding of conscious representations already present in working memory. Investigations have shown that a location habitually marked by a conspicuous distraction can be inhibited. What is the method by which this suppression is achieved? Previous explorations into proactive suppression provided some insights, but the methodologies employed presented methodological limitations that ultimately prevented strong conclusions. With a novel search-probe approach, we sought to overcome these restrictions. Participants, in the course of search trials, were engaged in finding a unique-shaped target; simultaneously, a strikingly prominent single-colored distractor regularly appeared at a high-probability location. To index the spatial distribution of attention at the precise moment a search would commence, participants on randomly interleaved probe trials discriminated the orientation of a briefly displayed tilted bar located at one of the search targets. Search trial results, replicated meticulously, affirmed the previous findings about reduced attentional capture when a noticeable distractor surfaced in the high-probability location. Crucially, there was no alteration in probe discrimination observed between high-probability and low-probability locations. In Experiment 2, we amplified the incentive to overlook the location predicted to have the highest probability, and, remarkably, the accuracy of probe discrimination was higher at that high-probability location. A reactive mechanism seems to be implied by these results, where the high-probability location was initially selected before being suppressed.
